JOURNAL 2
The poem brings out the absurdity in the natural phenomenon of rainfall. It has given me
another view from which rain is deemed destructive or unwanted despite all its benefits. In the
beginning, I agree with the author that rain is always for the best (Shuttle, 1992). Despite this,
the author looks at those whose lifestyles are disrupted by the ‘privileges’ brought about by rain
and wants the rain to pay for that through taxation. Indeed, many individuals on earth do not
appreciate it when it rains, an example being those that experience flooding whenever it rains.
This poem has opened my eyes to the meaning of one man’s meat being another’s poison from
such a natural phenomenon like rain, an aspect that brings me to the realization that what
benefits one person may not necessarily benefit another. This means that every opinion or event
has an opposing side that is equally relevant. As such, I have been made aware of the positives
and negatives of natural occurrences hence the need to apply the same to the artificial
occurrences in our lives to live harmoniously with everyone. This means that no matter how bad
or good an event is, there will always be some people with an opposing view that should be
listened to and considered.
