Psychological Impact of Racism on Child and Adult Health
Introduction
Currently, the world is holding conversations on racial discrimination. Following the
death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers, there has been a global call for change in
the laws that allow such vices to occur. A huge contributor to this outcry has been the global TV
personalities who have used their limelight to shed light on the issues faced by colored people
across the globe but more specifically in the U.S. The just-concluded U.S. presidential
campaigns have also been shaped towards this agenda. The two candidates have each expressed
their willingness to amend some of the laws that have allowed systemic racisms to thrive. The
sports fraternity has not been left behind in this fight. These superstars have continually
expressed their disappointment in different states for their failure to combat this problem.
Recently, the NBA, WNBA, and MLB players boycotted games in support of this
movement. During the NBA playoffs, players also donned jerseys with the messages they
wanted to pass on. Some of these messages included “How Many More” “Say Their Names” and
“I Can’t Breathe.Numerous demonstrations were also held with people clashing with the law
enforcers. The agenda for this Black Lives Matter movement was to bring the public the ongoing
systemic racism and the related effects. This paper will discuss the effects of racism on the
mental and general health of children and adults. Evidence will be provided that correlates racial
discrimination to mental and general health conditions associates with people.
Racism as a Key Influence on Children and Adult Health
Racial discrimination heavily influences health inequities from a social perspective. The
World Health Organization refers to social determinants as all environments that an individual
