Trump Immigration Policies
Trump's immigration policies were to protect American workers and industries. Most of his immigration
policies have been enacted through executive actions and existing regulations. The policies center on restricting legal
immigration, completing border walls with Mexico, reducing the number of asylum seekers, reducing the number
of refugees, and many more. Trump administration put stricter regulations for legal immigration applicants. The
application has been very difficult for applicants as it warrants face to face interviews. Thus, this policy has reduced
the number of visas issued since 2019. This policy was put to minimize the high unemployment rate in the U.S. and
improve the country's economy (Mayda & Peri, 2017).
One notable policy that did not work was building the border wall with Mexico. The wall was supposed to
run from San Diego and Tijuana, having been authorized in 1996 (Meckler, 2017). Trump forced Mexico to
contribute funds to construct the wall, but that strategy did not work. Therefore, he declared defense funds to be used
to cater to the bills of wall construction. Democrats opposed the decision, but republicans were mostly in favor.
However, residents in California, New Mexico, and Arizona were significantly affected by the wall because it will
reduce trade in the region and hinder accessibility to endangered species like ocelots. Many government agencies
were also against the policy, citing that its implementation requires enormous funds. The funds can be used in other
country development projects. Instead of constructing the wall, many people suggest more enforcement to
apprehend immigrants who overstay their visas (Meckler, 2017).
Reducing the number of asylum seekers was another policy that did not work well in the country. Trump
tried to restrict asylum applicants by ordering them to use the allocated ports of entry. Trump separated immigrant
children from their parents, an action that was opposed by many people, thus bringing the policy to an end. Trump
has negotiated with Mexico and came up with an asylum agreement that will require asylum seekers from Mexico,
Honduras, and Guatemala to apply to one of the countries instead of all coming to America. The policies have
