Nurses Employment and Retention Strategies
Retaining employees in any organization is a significant concern since employee turnover
disrupts an organization's normal functioning, and the process is costly. According to Chaney
(2019), a report compiled by Nursing Solutions, Inc. shows that the turnover rate in hospitals
currently stands at 16.2 percent with the costs of turnover ranging between $38900 to 59700,
which translates to $5.13M to $8M annually (Chaney, 2019). This is much money that can be
utilized in buying medicine or the procurement of new technology for hospitals. According to
Chaney (2019), a one-percent reduction in turnover rates translates to $410500 cost-saving. This
shows the need to come up with strategies to retain employees.
To retain nurses, they need to be engaged in making decisions that would affect their
performance. Low engagement in the hospital environment often leads to excessive overtimes,
lack of flexibility, and unpredictable schedules. Even though some of these factors cannot be
avoided, the leaders often have to engage employees by celebrating teamwork, carrying out
surveys and acting on the survey results, and recognizing good jobs (Kanyumbaya & Msosa,
2020). Such a relationship between leaders and nurses create a conducive environment for both
doctors and nurses to practice.
Furthermore, fostering communication and teamwork helps in caring for a good
relationship between nurses and their department members. Nurses and doctors need each other
to manage their patients. Therefore, the leaders must develop strong communication skills
between the team members to resolve conflicts and reduce errors. According to Kanyumbaya &
Msosa (2020), when organization goals are expressed by the leaders appropriately, nurses can
adjust effectively and prioritize urgent tasks. This brings growth to the organization.
