PROBATION, PAROLE & COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS 2
Probation
Advantages & Disadvantages
Probation is a prison sentence that is suspended. The objective is to maintain some
control over criminals while rehabilitating them by use of community programs. There are
advantages and disadvantages linked to probation, which includes: probation compared to
being in prison saves on cash; placing an inmate in a correctional institution cost eight times
more than putting him under the care of a federal probation officer (Sturm et al. 2020). Some
low-risk offenders are allowed to do community service, which not only allows them to give
back to the community but also allows them to continue to obtain jobs and become excellent
citizens. A drawback of being on probation is because there is no close supervision, implying
that an offender has the liberty to re-offend, which leads to a high rate of repeat offenders.
Parole
Advantages & Disadvantages
Parolees are persons who have already been imprisoned. Parole permits qualifying
prisoners to be released early. It is an inmate reentry plan and a correctional strategy aimed at
rehabilitating prisoners and guiding them back to society to lead productive lives (Rhine et
al., 2017). There are significant advantages and disadvantages linked to parole, which
includes: Imprisonment is costly. In contrast, the parole cost per parolee is as little as $1,321.
For instance, incarcerating a single offender in the USA costs around $21,000 per year.
Parole reduces the cost and makes it easier for prisoners to work full time at work under
correctional supervision, benefiting the government by paying taxes. The most significant
drawback to parole is that it offers an opening for offenders to start their crimes earlier than
they should. Society takes a chance that a released inmate will commit another crime and
become a serial offender.
