The moral debate in Muslim communities continues to be one of the most controversial
subjects, particularly the concept of Jihad. Many religious philosophers have argued concerning
the moral importance of the concept of Jihad in the Islamic religion. For instance, Stephen Prothero
asserts that “One of the challenges for practitioners of any religion is wrestling with elements in
their tradition that have been used to justify evil and then bending those elements back toward the
good (p. 35). Fundamentally, many people have had different ideologies about the concept of Jihad
and term it as evil. As such, this discussion paper will explain the overall meaning of the concept
of Jihad in light of Prothero's overall ideology.
The Two Meanings of Jihad
The Jihad (struggle) is a religious obligation of the Muslim communities to fundamentally
protect the rights and justice of others (Prothero, 2011). Generally, it serves as defense, expansion,
mobilization, and Muslim self-understanding. Therefore, the struggle is the way of Muslim
communities, and death for the sake of God is their highest aspiration. Another meaning of the
concept of Jihad is “exerted effort” to undertake a holy war. The Muslim faith believes in the
liberation of humanity from the oppression of the world. Therefore, despite the moral debate that
has arisen in the Muslim communities, Muslims are obligated to involve themselves in Jihad and
revolutionary struggle (Prothero, 2011).
Why Prothero Is Prompted To This Comment on Jihad Being “Used To Justify Evil”
Prothero’s ideology about Jihad as being “used to justify evil is basically founded on the
overall aspect of terrorists using religion to commit terrorist attacks. Although the concept of Jihad
is a good religious obligation to protect the rights and justice of others, other Muslims have begun
to bend its traditional elements to suit their own interests. As such, Prothero was prompted to
