Folic Acid Deficiency Anaemia
Folic acid deficiency anemia is a condition that develops due to a lack of enough folic
acid. Folic acid is vitamin folate from a synthetic version known as B9 (Barragán-Ibañez et
al, 2016). Vitamin B9 escapes from the body while urinating and sweating; thus, the body
needs to replace the vitamin daily. Folic acid is a vitamin B component, which helps the body
generate new blood cells, especially red blood cells. Red blood cells are significant for
oxygen transportation. However, lack of sufficient red blood cells leads to anemia,
responsible for tiresomeness and weak body. Therefore, the body needs to have enough folic
acid daily within the blood system.
Folic acid is present in most of the food that people consume every day. However,
some individuals do not access enough folic acid in their diet or have problems absorbing it
into the bloodstream; thus, it is important to get check-ups from the doctor to ensure that one
understands the situation well (Khan & Jialal, 2019). Furthermore, pregnant women are the
most at risk due to lack of enough folic acid because it leads to congenital disabilities in their
babies. For instance, spina bifida in infants is a serious defect that occurs during pregnancy
due to folic acid deficiency anemia. Spina bifida makes the baby develop a malformed spinal
column. Individuals with folic acid deficiency and supplements help them increase their folic
acid levels, reducing the risk of getting anemia. Additionally, some medics have added that
having sufficient folic acid can reduce other complications like heart disease and colon
cancer.
Signs and Symptoms
Folic acid deficiency anemia signs and symptoms include fatigue, pale skin, weight
loss, diarrhea, loss of appetite, headache, irritability, mouth sores, and difficult concentration.
