PERSONHOOD 2
The Concept of Personhood as Used in the Nursing as Caring Theory
Nursing as caring theory acts as a framework to direct nursing practice. The fundamental
premise of this theory is that all persons are caring, and for one to be called a person, they must
demonstrate their caring nature. However, it takes time to develop the aspect of caring, and the
duration taken fully varies from person to person (Abalos, Rivera, Locsin, & Schoenhofer,
2016). The theory of Nursing as Caring is rooted by seven major assumptions; namely, it’s a

whole at that moment, personhood is living a life rooted to caring, personhood is improved by
caring, and that nursing is a profession and a discipline (Delaunay, Kahn, Tatay, & Liu, 2016).
These assumptions are essential in nursing to provide the best care for the patients.
Personhood in nursing implies living a life that is all about caring. This means living by

possibilities of enhancing their caring capabilities in each moment of their lives (Delaunay et al.,
2016). The process of personhood is improved through participation in improving our
relationship with others. All relationships are upgraded through caring, and all relations carry
mutual expectations.
Personhood in nursing is the primary component of patient-centered care. Every person
needs to be treated with dignity and care centered on respecting their wishes and needs.
Personhood shapes healthcare by influencing the way nurses interact with their patients.
Personhood influences how people interact with each other and the view of the other as a person
(Sofronas, Wright, & Carnevale, 2018). Nurses’ ability to understand their patients’ needs and
