Peer Pressure and Crime
Abstract
Peer pressure occurs when an individual does something he or she doesn’t normally do in
a bid to fit in a given group. It has been witnessed in all age groups by the youths are known to
suffer the most from it. More often than not, the things to be done are normally illegal or very
difficult. Consequences are normally tragic as they result in far-reaching negative effects.
Research shows that it plays a big role in triggering criminal activities. Differential association
theory can be used to explain the occurrence of the above mentioned phenomena. Another theory
that can be used is known as social learning theory. It is usually connected with association.
Crime is anything done against the law. (Krohn et.al, 2009) This paper will discuss the adoption
of a negative behavior (smoking) by a lady known as Brandi, basing on the aforementioned
theories. It also gives their limitations and strengths.
