CARE ACCESS IN RURAL AREAS 2
Improving Care Access in Rural Areas
Healthcare access for people in rural areas presents a huge challenge as previously
identified in the annotated bibliography. Barriers to healthcare access for this population include
provider availability, geographic location, and transportation issues that affect patients’ access to
healthcare practitioners. Limited supply of available resources may lead to disparities evidenced
by adverse health outcomes in rural regions. Public health care focuses in reducing disparities in
healthcare access by implementing interventions that enhance access for vulnerable and
disadvantaged populations. Practical solutions should be implemented to enhance healthcare
access for people in remote areas hence reducing health disparities for the population.
Elements of the Problem
Barriers to healthcare access for patients in rural areas are a major contributor to health
disparities. Barriers include any aspect that makes a patient in a rural area less likely than those
in urban areas to access a healthcare service. These barriers reduce the potential for accessing
healthcare for rural dwellers when compared to urban dwellers. Barriers to rural care access are
numerous. First and foremost, healthcare facilities are more concentrated in urban areas and
scarce in rural areas (Adams et al., 2019). This is mainly due to the high population
concentration of urban areas hence healthcare providers mostly target the populations. Due to the
clustering of health centers in urban regions, practitioners are also clustered in many urban
regions compared to rural areas. Therefore, a person living in an urban region is more likely to
access a health center and practitioner.
Another barrier to access in rural areas is the availability of infrastructure for accessing
healthcare services. Some remote areas may present the challenge of transport and
communication. For instance, the absence of roads in good condition may disadvantage patients
