Energy Efficiency Management in Buildings
Commercial buildings use 20% of all the energy in the United States and almost a third of
that energy is wasted (Cho et al. 2017). The high energy usage in buildings leads to the need for
more efficient energy management in the structures. Population growth and increase in business
activity continue to increase the demand for energy. At the same time, efficient energy usage is
increasingly becoming important due to the effects of climate change and global warming on the
planet. Therefore, there is a general push from many stakeholders for energy efficient buildings
and practices to enhance sustainability. The design and construction of buildings that are energy
efficient as well as management of energy use to ensure efficiency are crucial in working
towards sustainability. This paper discusses the concept of energy efficiency in buildings and
outlines the crucial aspects of energy efficiency management for environmental sustainability.
Energy Efficiency and Benefits
The definition of energy efficiency is important because it provides conceptual clarity on
the goals that building design and management try to achieve. According to Shukla and Sharma
(2018), energy efficiency in buildings is the energy consumption per square meter of a building
when compared to benchmarks set for that type of building within defined climatic conditions.
Efficiency is thus defined relative to benchmarks set by industry organizations. Other than the
relativity of efficiency, it can also be defined as the extent to which energy production and use in
a building have been optimized to get the best use scenario (Shukla and Sharma 2018).
Therefore, energy efficiency in buildings may be defined relative to industry standards and
benchmarks or generally in the optimization of energy usage in buildings. Choosing benchmark
for energy efficiency is crucial in guiding the implementation of management approaches
specific to the energy goals. Government agencies such as the Office of Energy Efficiency and
