Ketogenic Diet
Over the last 50 years, the United States health care professionals have come up with
several diet guidelines meant to reduce total fat levels. These diets were meant to curb the rising
burden of sedentary diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Recently, one such diet, the
Ketogenic diet, has gained attention from nutrition researchers and the public. A ketogenic diet is
composed of high-fat levels and low carbs. Despite the support that it has gained, especially
among the general public, I do not support its use because of its association with bad cholesterol,
fats, and reduced carbohydrates and fiber.
The diet is not recommended because it is associated with increased levels of bad
cholesterol (LDL) and decreased good cholesterol levels. Most of the ketogenic diet is made up
of fats. This makes the diet not favorable for certain conditions such as obesity, glut4 deficiency,
and high blood pressure. Since the diet encourages fat intake, people tend to indulge in eating
fatty foods such as dairy products and fatty meat due to poor diet tracking. Research done on an
eight-year-old girl in Germany with Glut-1 deficiency showed a marked increase in the blood
lipid level after 3 years (Klepper et al., 2016). Additionally, the girl experienced asymptomatic
hypertriglyceridemia. After the withdrawal of the Ketogenic diet, the blood lipid level went back
to normal. The National Lipid Association also raised concerns about the ketogenic diet's fatal
impacts, especially among patients with cardiovascular conditions. The increased LDL
cholesterol levels, preceded by an increase in Apo lipoprotein B, are highly detrimental to the
body (Joshi, 2020). Thus, it is not recommendable to adopt a ketogenic diet plan due to the
increase in fatalities.
The human body uses carbohydrates majorly for energy production. A ketogenic diet
recommends the intake of less than 50 grams of carbohydrates in a day. Thus, this may come as a
