Introduction
Literary analysis involves discussing components such as characters, setting, tone,
imagery, and style. They are the identifiable elements in a story. Through literary analysis, more
understanding of the plot or story is achieved. The characters are the people in the story, and this
includes the main characters and the guests. They are all significant since they contribute to the
success of the story. The paper also discusses the effectiveness of the narrative writing style used
in the story. The focus is on the short story "Entropy" by Thomas Pynchon. It is a story that has
interesting events and a comparison of two different environments. The purpose of this paper is to
focus on these elements of the "Entropy" short story.
Characters
Meatball Mulligan and Callisto are the main characters in the story. Meatball is presented
as a social person who loves to have fun and spend memorable moments with friends. Many of his
friends come to the birthday party where many drinks are available. There is chaos in his apartment
due to the people getting drunk, and he tries to control them. Thus, despite being a person who
loves partying, he recognizes a need to maintain order. On the other hand, we have Callisto, who
is calm and isolates himself from the outside world (Chaplin par.3). They are with Aubade with
doors closed, and thus no one can get in. Callisto is presented as a calm individual who loves order
and silence. It is the case considering that there is calmness in the room, encouraging one to get

into meditation. Callisto remembers some previous events and starts to narrate them to Aubade.
His love for animals is demonstrated by the way he treats the dying bird (Chaplin par.3). He
embraces it to his body so that it can acquire the warmth from his body. He thought that keeping
the bird warm would make him live.
The other characters in the story are the guests at Mulligan's party, such as Saul, Sandor
Rojas, Vincent, Duke, Paco, and Krinkles. They were more guests at the party, and some were
uninvited. With time, it became a party of many people who were in different professional fields.
They participate in creating a clear picture of how disorganized the party was. Aubade is Callisto's
wife, and she is in the apartment with him as the party is going on the third floor, the apartment
below them. These characters were significant in the story since they helped the author create a
great imaginary picture in the reader's mind. They helped in ensuring that the disorderliness in the
Mulligan's house is believable. The fact that girls were lying all over the place demonstrates the
chaos in the house.
Setting
The setting of this short story is in the apartments of two tenants in Washington, DC. The
two tenants are Meatball Mulligan and Callisto. Mulligan lives on the third floor, while Callisto
resides in the house just above him. In the two houses, there is much difference in terms of the
order. There is much chaos in Mulligan's house, considering a party that involves so many people.
Some of them came, and they were not invited, and this demonstrates some kind of disorder. The
doors and windows were open, and thus, people would get in whenever they want. For instance,
in Callisto's house, the door and windows were closed, and therefore, no one could get into his
house without his permission. Closing the doors is a way of controlling the people who have access
