1. Describe the difference between acute and chronic pain? 1 Points
Acute pain is caused by a specific condition, and it does not last for more than six
months; thus, acute pain disappears when the particular health condition causing it, vanishes.
Some specific conditions that cause acute pain include surgery, broken bones, burns, body
injuries, flu, labor and childbirth, and dental work (Derry et al.,2017). Therefore, acute pain can
go away after the patient has taken his/her medication to heal the specific condition leading to
severe pain.
On the other hand, chronic pain is long-lasting and ongoing pain that can last for more
than six months, and chronic pain continues even after its cause disappear. Further, the patient
experiences pain in the nervous system for several weeks, months, or several years. The leading
causes of chronic pain include cancer, fibromyalgia pain, headache, arthritis, nerve pain, and
back pain (Derry et al.,2017). People experiencing chronic pain may suffer stigmatization,

primarily where no actual reason is found attributing pain. Besides, chronic pain may require
patients to seek specialized medication and rehabilitation to reduce societal stigmatization.
Chronic pain can worsen, leading to patients' stress. Moreover, on several occasions, chronic
pain cannot be cured but only managed.
2. List some reasons why a patient would experience acute versus chronic pain and give each
example the patient presentation for each example? 3 Points
Acute pain is common with a patient suffering from a gallbladder attack. Patients who are
suffering from gallbladder attacks experience severe pain in their mid-to-upper right quadrant of
the abdomen (Nguyen et al., 2018). The patient may also have sudden pain that appears and
disappear around his/her chest and back. Patients suffering from gallbladder attacks will witness
the following symptoms: diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and nausea. This condition may result to the
risk of a ruptured gallbladder if the patient fails to seek medication. The treatment available for
gallbladder attacks includes surgery and the prescription of antibiotics. Patients suffering from
gallbladder attacks recover after two weeks with no more acute pain.
Another reason for acute pain experience among patients is abdominal pain (Nguyen et
al., 2018). It is a severe condition that develops suddenly on the patient's abdomen over a short
time. The patient may experience the following signs: severe pain followed by vomiting and
nausea. If the patient suffering from abdominal pain is experiencing bleeding, the patient
presentation should be immediate for urgent intervention. The abdominal condition is treated
through surgery and medical therapy
Besides, the patient suffering from trauma may experience acute pain resulting from
physical injuries. Patients with trauma resulting from injuries may witness signs such as
paleness, fatigue, racing heartbeat, poor concertation, and pain attack (Nguyen et al., 2018). The
