Step 2: GIS Scope of Analysis
Riyadh is a desert plateau located in the central area of Saudi Arabia. The Red Sea and the
mountains on both the side cover Riyadh city. During the rainy season, Riyadh experiences
rainfall from the Hillside to The Red Sea area, which leads to severe flooding situations in the
urban areas, which come under the part of the sea and The Hills. One of such severe flooding
is that occurred in Riyadh city of Saudi Arabia is on 16 November 2013. It was so intense that
disrupted traffic and created a Rush in the City because of which the local administration needs
to stop the schools and colleges. Because of a flood there are nearly up to 1357 peoples are
stucked in the flood, 10 peoples were missing and nearly four people are found dead due to the
large flow of water.
This flood was so intense that it affected 5 million peoples. All the tunnels were flooded because
of the higher flow of water. All the day-to-day services such as electricity, transportation,
telephone services, and daily service providers were disturbed because of this severe flood
occurred in Riyadh city. The primary reason behind this flooding was the Storms with a thick
density of air moving in the South in direction from Iraq to Saudi Arabia towards Qatar and
Kuwait.
The primary reason behind such severe flooding was the rainfall precipitation in the Riyadh
region of Saudi Arabia. The precipitation ranges from 70 mm to 110 mm. Generally, the flooding
in the Riyadh region occurs on average of 3 hours of duration but this was so intense that it
affected 1359 peoples and also create a lot of damage for the infrastructure and properties
of nearly about 10,000 homes and 17 000 cars and bikes assets.
In this study, we are performing a detailed analysis of the reasons behind these floods we found
that there are different related numbers of factors, which are the primary reasons behind these

floods, and these factors are responsible for creating such a Wars flood disaster in the Riyadh
region.
One of the similar example for the severe flooding is occurred in Jeddah City. Jeddah is the
kingdom of Saudi Arabia it is situated in the coastal plain area of the middle and western side of
Saudi Arabia. Jeddah City is similar to Riyadh, which always suffers from severe flooding that
occurs due to the Storms and the precipitation the rainfall in Jeddah City happens similar
to Riyadh, which moves from the Hillside to The Red Sea area. One of the severe flooding
has occurred in Jeddah is during November 2009. This was so intense that it has killed 113
people and damage a lot of property and infrastructure in Jeddah City.
Step 3: Hypothesis
Several different factors affect the high flooding disasters, which include strong
Meteorological phenomenon, which occurs because of excessive development by humans in the
land mining which creates exploitation of natural resources. There are different methodologies
and ways are find out for mitigating the flood hazard risk and their impact. However, one of the
most efficient ways of meeting the flood hazard is by creating flood hazard maps. This reduces
the impact of the flood on the people and the property. This is one of the primary responsibility
of local administration to generate the flood hazard maps for their respective region, which will
indicate the areas, which comes under high flooding risk. So that the rate of development and
construction in that particular area can be limited and the risk of infrastructure damage can be
reduced. In addition, the safety of a people and resident of that area can be managed. If flood
hazard maps cannot be generated by the local administration then there are other several methods
