POWER TO PARDON 2
Introduction
The constitution of the United States gives the president the power to pardon for offenses
against the United States except in cases of impeachment. However, the constitution is very
specific to the crimes that the president is allowed to pardon. The constitution limits the president
to pardon only federal crime offenses. This, however, does not mean that the president or any
other body can implicate the same constitution to commit offenses. If the president was allowed
to pardon some sensitive matters such as impeachment convictions, let alone pardoning
themselves, then we would have a whole lot of criminals within the government.
If presidents were allowed to pardon themselves for federal crimes, then the first virtue
that would be implicated would be the ethics of a nation. The United States of America has
worked hard to maintain social ethics, mainly in leadership. This has been done to ensure
peaceful coexistence among the Americans. For example, among all countries globally, the
United States of America has recorded the most peaceful transition of leaders throughout history.
This is unlike the case of countries such as Libya, Liberia, and Uganda, just to name a few. As
such, each time after elections, despite people having differed before in terms of politics, they
continue to live together peacefully and in harmony.
Assuming the president was allowed to pardon his/herself for federal crimes, then there
would be a likelihood that after every election, if the outgoing president did not win, he/she
would alter with the electoral system only to get back to the presidency and forgive himself. In
such cases, the president would order for the police forces or the military to disperse rioters in
the harshest ways possible, including using live bullets. Generally, there would be a whole lot of
unethical practices from the presidential body.
