Inpatient and Outpatient Settings
The healthcare industry is constantly changing which leads to changes in the delivery of
care for inpatient and outpatient settings. The goal is to improve a patient’s experience, increase
the quality of care and lower the cost of healthcare. Because of these healthcare settings there are
more patients who are now more involved with their medical care. In this paper I will discuss
inpatient and outpatient settings, the typical services provided and key personnel involved, trends
that are currently impacting inpatient and outpatient settings, ways to capitalize on these trends
to improve operation and bottom line performance, as well as ways to mitigate the negative
impact of these trends.
Identify and describe inpatient settings and outpatient settings
Inpatient care differs from outpatient care in many ways. Inpatient care is when you are
formally admitted in a hospital under doctors’ orders (Peconic Bay Medical Center, 2017). Any
services and care received while in the hospital up until the day of discharge are all apart of
inpatient care (Peconic Bay Medical Center, 2017). Outpatient care is theoretically related to
primary care. Outpatient care is when a person receives medical and health care services without
being fully admitted to the hospital or if they are only treated in the hospital for 24 hours or less
(Peconic Bay Medical Center, 2017). Circumstances such as going to the emergency room is
considered outpatient care, but if that visit results in a person being admitted they are now
considered an inpatient (Peconic Bay Medical Center, 2017).
Inpatient settings include nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, acute-care
hospitalization, and psychiatric hospitals. Outpatient settings include private practices,
freestanding, mobile, home care, hospice care, outpatient long term care and public health
services (Wahi, 2013). For instance in an inpatient setting nursing homes admit and care for
