1. To what extent does Hutchinson’s being a woman play a part in the accusations against her?
Anne Hutchinson was a Puritan woman who had usurped male authority. She claimed that she
was inspired by a revelation directly from God. This was considered to be a violation of Puritan beliefs, as
this was something only male Puritan ministers were supposed to experience. Hutchinson, spurred on by
her beliefs, challenged powerful leaders because Europeans see women as a weaker and less powerful
people. During this time, the common belief was that women should not hold opinions of their own nor
act on their wishes. It was because of this belief that Anne Hutchinson was accused of acting out of
character and not being a woman.
2. Why does Winthrop consider “natural” liberty dangerous?
Winthrop believed that “natural” liberty was dangerous and corrupt because he considers it to be
incompatible and inconsistent with authority. For him, autonomy and having an agency of free though
was the freedom to do evil as well as good. He even likened it to being worse than brute beasts, who only
grow to be more evil as time passes. He also mentions that it is God’s will for man to create order to
separate himself from animals. Winthrop believes in civil or federal liberty, where it considered to be
good when a person chooses to be of service or to be lorded by a person with a higher authority.
3. How do Hutchinson and Winthrop differ in their understanding of religious liberty?
Anne Hutchinson believed that following religious laws was not required for eternal salvation and
claimed that those who are truly saved need not obey the law of either man or God. This assertion is
known as antinomianism (Greek, “against the law”) and is considered to be heretic. Antinomianism is a
school of thought that rejects laws and argues against moral and religious norms. On the other hand, John
Winthrop believed that God has formed a covenant with man. He believes that God expects man to live
according to the Scriptures and that man should create laws in accordance to these texts.
