The Same Difference, Film Reflection Paper
Background Information
Discrimination has been evident since time immemorial. However, the most popular case
scenario is slavery during colonialization. The black race has suffered discrimination more than
any other. The most discriminated are the minorities more often, but discrimination exists even
within the minority groups. Most are not known as it is not discussed (Awad & Martinez, 2011).
Apart from racial minorities, other minorities have emerged based on gender and sexual
orientation. Discrimination is evident within the minority groups as well. The film exposes sex
racism within the lesbians even though lesbians are minorities.
Film synopsis
By the name The Same Difference, the film is a convincing documentary whose story
evolves in lesbians discriminating against other lesbians. The discrimination is exposed based on
gender roles. The movie entails clips of lesbian stories discussion on performance hypocrisy and
performance expectations regarding masculine and feminine traits. The documentary was intended
to make society less judgmental and more open-minded, which have been missing in society for a
long, as many films did not embrace them. The director aimed to deconstruct the hetero-normative
gender roles that have, to some extent, permanently printed on the black lesbians and bisexuals
("Kanopy," 2020).
Sexual racism, sexual behavior, and sexual identity
Sexual racism is real in the USA and across the world, especially within the LGBT
community. In the lesbians' sector, black American lesbians are expected to play the masculine
side; if they play the feminine side, they are associated with hypocrisy (Callander et al., 2015).
