DOCUMENTARY RHETORIC ANALYSIS 2
Introduction
Authors have their ways of communicating with their audience and make them understand
their message. Different writing styles and the different presentations are the determiners of the
understandability of the work context. Documentaries also use the art of using rhetoric to pass a
message, and at times what an audience sees is not exactly what is being communicated. Coates
uses different rhetoric categories to bring his audience to the events in his books. In this discussion,
the focus is on current social issues, and a documentary in which it's the author has succeeded in
using different rhetoric categories to bring the message home.
Ways That the Film Is Working
Just like Coates, Pare Lorentz has used skills in delivering his message through his
documentary, "The River." The River is a documentary where the Mississippi is the main
character. It takes us through the Mississippi, where it originates, where it heads to, the effects it
caused, and the great significance it has brought to people. Initially, cotton plantations are working
well with good produces. As time goes by, coal mining takes place where wood is needed causing
deforestation. The land then experiences the effects of deforestation, which include erosion and
flooding of the valleys. With time, the land becomes impoverished with minimized produce
causing a counter effect on farmers and their livelihoods. The results include economic problems
and environmental problems, which take great significance in the nation. As the documentary
comes to an end, the government comes in, and new farming methods start being used to bring
back the productivity of the land. A new generation is created where they use water to generate
electricity, and the value of the land is once again acquired.
