Post your response to the following: In what circumstances would each approach to
stakeholder impact analysis (moral standards, 5-question, and Pastin’s approach) be
most useful? Generalize about the approaches and describe when each would be most
or least useful.
5 question approach:
1. Profitable? (Shareholders’ usually short-term)
2. Legal? (Society at large- legally enforceable rights)
3. Fair? (Fairness for all)
4. Right? (Other rights of all)
5. Going to further sustainable development? (Specific rights)
most useful- most effective in examining an ethical scenario without long term
externalities and when a specific focus is desired by the decision process designer
Least useful- the first question focuses on profit, which is a substantially less
comprehensive measurement tool than cost–benefit analysis and/or risk–benefit analysis
Moral Standards approach: the moral standards approach builds directly on the three
fundamental interests of stakeholders 1. Maximize the net benefit to society as a whole (Does the
action maximize social benefits and minimize social injuries?) 2. Respect and protect ( Is the
action consistent with each person’s rights?) 3. Fair distribution of benefits and burdens (Will the
action lead to a just distribution of benefits and burdens?)
most useful- leads the decision maker to a more broadly based analysis of net benefit
rather than just profitability
least useful- for internal decisions and profitability
Pastin’s approach: The appropriate approach to ethical analysis involves examining the four key
aspects of ethics which are:
1. Ground rule ethics (To illuminate an organization’s and/or an individual’s rules and values)
2. End-point ethics (To determine the greatest net good for all concerned)
3. Rule ethics (To determine what boundaries a person or organization should take into account
according to ethical principles) 4. Social contract ethics (To determine how to move the
boundaries to remove concerns or conflicts)
most useful- to be used primarily for internal company decisions
least useful- profit and cost-benefit analysis
