PRINCIPLES OF MISSION COMMAND 2
Principles of Mission Command
Abstract
The first encounters between the United States Army, Al Qaeda, and the Taliban brought
about lessons that played an important part in Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan. The United
States was focused on ensuring the enemy was enveloped, and no mistakes were encountered
similar during the siege of Tora Bora. In operation Anaconda, the battleplan was used for a quick
operation to use both the United States and Afghanistan forces. However, intelligence failures
transformed project Anaconda into a slow and long war against an invisible enemy. (Masougkas,
2018) notes that the terrain advantaged the Al Qaeda and Taliban, but they could not create massive
casualties that would make Americans exit Afghanistan. The United States Army later adopted the
use of airstrikes to subdue the enemy. An analysis of Operation Anaconda indicates that Operation
Anaconda was a success due to changing tactical gears by the United States Army. This paper
analyzes the seven principles of mission command concerning Operation Anaconda in
Afghanistan.
