BASIC COUNSELLING SKILLS 2
Initial Counseling Session
A Hispanic woman in her mid-thirties enters my office. My office is located on the upper
floor at the corner of a building away from other rooms. Its location is designed to provide a
serene, secure environment to clients. Above the entrance is a sign with the words, "Meeting in
Progress'' to promote the room's privacy. The office has curtails with shades of blue and green. It
has chairs with ample back support that can be adjusted and moved with ease. The clients’ chair
faces the door to add on the sense of safety and free will. At the end of the room is a space with
live plants with large windows that allow the room's natural lighting.
Client Description
My client is named Maya. She has persistent suicidal thoughts and feels no reason to live.
She confesses, experiencing a failed relationship after divorcing her husband. Maya comes with
a note about her death and confesses attempting to access suicidal means like medication and
weapons. She was directed to me by a general practitioner after visiting him with eating and food
issues.
