HOW THE AVAILABILITY OF THE COVID-19 VACCINE WILL CHANGE THE WORLD2
It has been cited that vaccines do not save lives; vaccination does. 2020 will go down in
history as the year when humans faced a global pandemic of the 21
st
Century COVID-19.
Since it hit the world late in 2019, COVID-19 has, just to mention a few of its effects, led to the
loss more than one million lives globally, brought fear and uncertainties to people, and adversely
impacted the social and economic aspects of human life. Thus, the development of a vaccine to
combat this pandemic carries along with it hope for people globally. Indeed, vaccines have been
dramatically improved public health for more than a century with the groundwork to their
development being attributed to a British country doctor known as Edward Jenner in 1796.
Accordingly, the availability of the COVID-19 vaccine will change the world in these following
ways. Firstly, it will definitely cut the loss of human lives and, secondly, it will restore the social
and economic order to affected countries worldwide.
Currently, researchers have presented the world with two COVID-19 vaccine candidates;
one from Moderna and another from Pfizer named as mRNA-1273 and BNT162b2, respectively.
One notable issue concerning the two vaccines is the revolutionary science behind their
development. These vaccines are mRNA-based. While it presents an opportunity through which
serious diseases could be combated in ways not possible before, messenger RNA plays a critical
role in facilitating a more targeted production of the body’s protein (McGrail, 2020). McGrail
explains that because of the inexpensive cost of production, elevated efficacy, and shorter
periods of manufacturing, both candidates could have significant implication for severe diseases
like COVID-19 since they have leveraged mRNA technology. Vaccines based on mRNA
technology are more suitable in controlling emergent pandemic and epidemic issues because of
the ease and efficacy of rapid production in response to new viral strain’s emergence (Lee et al.,
2018). This implies that the two proposed vaccines bring new hope to the fight against COVID-
