ENGL105 Unit 5 Individual Project
Identifying Platforms, Audience, Purpose, & Credibility
Written Communication
Platform, Audience, Purpose,
Credibility, and 3-5 sentence rationale:
To: Fowler Family Group
Subject: Avoiding Fake News Traps
Hi everyone,
In my ENGL105 class, we have been learning
about the ongoing problem of fake news
stories being widely spread across social
media sites. In looking back at my Facebook
feed over the past few months, I noticed many
stories that I now think were likely fake news
or click bait. So, I wanted to share this great
article on how to avoid falling for fake news:
http://www.npr.org/sections/alltechconsidered/
2016/12/05/503581220/fake-or-real-how-to-
self-check-the-news-and-get-the-facts.
The world is full of enough trouble without
starting to believe in made up problems, and
knowing how to filter out these untrue stories
might just make our days a bit brighter.
Can’t wait for the upcoming family reunion.
See you all soon!
Best,
Lorelei
Platform: Personal e-mail
Audience: The family of the author of the e-
mail.
Purpose: To educate the family on how to
avoid “fake news”.
Credibility: A credible source is included in
this e-mail and the writer does not appear to
have ulterior motives.
3-5 sentence rationale: The writer of this e-
mail appears to be attempting to educate her
family on the issue of sharing “fake news”.
They have included a news article to
corroborate her research on the subject.
There is no evidence within the e-mail to
show that they are trying to persuade their
family to do anything other than question
everything they read and do some research
before they post or repost something on their
social media pages.

enhancements in accounting

Platform: Twitter
Audience: People working or studying the
accounting field
Purpose: Persuade
Credibility: I would not find this to be a
credible source. There is no further
information attached to this tweet.
3-5 sentence rationale: Without further
information given, such as a link to a news
article or other credible source, this tweet is
simply a person attempting to sway readers
into believing their theory. There is no proof
that this is a fact. The writer could be a
random person who knows nothing about
accounting but has the idea that his way is
the best option.
