Compare and contrast the protest movements of Mexican Americans, American Indians, and
African Americans. What similarities and differences existed in Chicanismo, Red Power, and
Black Power (please also include #BlackLivesMatter). How do the differences reflect the
unique experiences of each group?
The Chicano movement is about people of Mexican origin who live in the southern United
States. In this place, they seek their own identity. This is a topic that has a lot of importance
in history and today since we continue to talk about people who are officially victims of
racism, prejudice, and stereotypes. Other movements like the Red Power and Black Power
are a clear example of this. Also, the violence with which these people are treated today is
another important factor to mention. America is a country of many prejudices. However, as
a country, a large part of its success is due to the diversity, that greatly enriches cultures.
Thanks to this acceptance, Americans have learned from immigrants. They brought with
them new ideas and ways of life. The United States was a very free society, open and
respectful towards the different (McCann et al., 2016).
In the past and actual history of the United States, several elements and conditions
affect a lot in the perceptions of acceptance and respect among its citizens. This country has
very marked areas in which diversity is accepted without any prejudice. On the contrary,
there are other areas in which this does not happen (McCann et al., 2016). For example in the
case of New York, almost everyone has no problem with an accent, color, and culture, besides
that, American citizens are surrounded by immigrant people. Nevertheless, in areas like
Arizona or others, authorities for example can intervene in the street if the individuals look
Mexican, black, or Indian (McCann et al., 2016).

The problem here is not so much the Mexican culture, it is the perception that native
Americans have about them. Some Americans believe that Mexico as a country is practically
stuck. Because of that, it is much more effective and easy to deport people who try to make
their lives in the United States. Many economic and political interests also encourage this.
However, as a society, we already face diverse sociological phenomena such as racism. This
is already an official issue among society and is bringing great problems (McCann et al.,
2016).
In the case of the American Indian movements and the African American movements,
they have great similarities too, which are the fight against the injustices of their people,
unemployment, housing in slums, truly racist treatment, land reclamation, etc. Both
movements fight against poverty and police brutality against African Americans and Native
Americans (Hammer & Potter, 2020). They have been broadening their focus on urban issues
to include many indigenous tribal problems that Native American groups have faced due to
settler colonialism in the Americas. Treaty rights, high unemployment rates, education,
continuity culture, and the preservation of indigenous cultures are clear examples. Both
movements have gone through many events of great violence where their activist leaders
have even ended up dead or missing (Hammer & Potter, 2020).
Each movement has important causes to exist, although it may perish that they are
dealing with the same issues such as equality, justice, racism, inequality, etc which are issues
that apparently should be less a more globalized and open society, it seems that they are
increasing because both those who demand and those who continue to reject these ideas of
acceptance have more intentions of conflict. Much of the violence and death
(#BlackLivesMatter) that is happening now through these movements I consider that it is
