Q1. Where does public opinion originate? Discuss its cognitive foundations and how
socialization produces these. How do most people organize their thoughts about political
issues? Why might public opinion be collectively rational? Why might it fail to be
reasonable?
Public opinion is the collection of various views and beliefs about issues and topics
related to politics. Public opinion is what the citizens of a country, more specifically Americans,
think about the different political issues that make the headlines daily. General ideas come from
the various topics and discussions that the media holds on matters about what the government is
going. Political media and also public relations influence public opinion from one person to
another. Since 1950, Television is the primary influence of public opinion (Watts and Dodds).
Political socialization is one of the cognitive foundations of public opinion. Political

childs political attitude and orientation. Schools are the next most influential agents because
they extend their knowledge by incorporating different lessons and new information.
There are primarily three ways in which people organize their thoughts about political
issues. These ways include through forming of ideologies, political expertise, and evaluative
motivation. An ideology is a bipolar recognition depending on left or right. That is, people
develop ideologies towards different political symbols (Watts and Dodds). An individual can
have a mental evaluation criterion under a left-right dimension. The person then decides what
part of the extent they lie, thus bases all other choices on this same dimension part.
On the other hand, evaluative motivation can form clear and justified opinions from
different political objections. Another way is political expertise, which works hand in hand with
the evaluative explanation. Expertise knows the facts about politics, which gives the individual
the right logic to form an opinion.
Public opinion may be collectively rational when consistent with the factual knowledge
of politics and in favor of the public and the countrys welfare at large. It might fail to be
reasonable when the public bases their opinion on false allegations or illogical knowledge about
the political system.
