Strangers in their Own Land
"Strangers in their land" is a book written by American Sociologist Arlie
Hochschild, who based her argument on Team Party supporters' views. This was
concerned about the political deviations in America (Hochschild, 2018). Such deviations
existed between the Republican and the Democratic parties, which came up in 2016.
The empathy wall can be traced in Hochschild's book, where people developed
their way of understanding themselves. They were not controlled by the government, and
they even reduced the amount of tax they were paying; wages also reduced. Therefore,
Hochschild expounded this concept in the first part of the book as a great paradox. She
emphasizes her research on the Trump supporters, who felt excited when Donald Trump
was elected president. They felt that their land would be exceptional. By getting
resources equitably, their views would be considered at the national level, and their living
standards would increase. But when Donald Trump officially became the president, their
expectations were doomed. Donald Trump was an emotional leader who did not focus on
the development but just emotions. He was not concerned with the pollution affecting the
Southerners. People developed health problems. There was limited support from the
government. Therefore, it was a great paradox because there was a contradiction between
Trump’s supporter’s initial statement and the final statement. They, therefore, developed
an empathy wall: They had their own beliefs and their way of understanding things. Thus,
an empathy wall could not be broken down depending on the above explanations.
Additionally, I would use sociological knowledge to start this process by doing
the interview. This interview would involve different sectors of the economy as well as
