PSY 355 Week 2 DQ 1
Please identify a type of fear (e.g., fear of heights, fear of snakes, fear of germs,
fear of flying) that you or someone you know possess. Then based on your
selected fear, answer the following questions:
How did this fear develop?
Could this fear arise in some other way?
Can such fears be explained through principles of classical conditioning? If
so, how? If not, why not?
One particular fear that affects me personally is the fear of spiders. When I was
eight years old my brother was bitten by a brown recluse. I believe that it was
this particular event that triggered my fear of spiders. Anyone who is familiar
with brown recluses knows how dangerous this particular spider can be. It can
cause extensive damage to the tissue and can even have the potential to be deadly
if left untreated. Fortunately my brother went to the doctor early enough to get
it treated before any extensive damage was done. They were able to remove some
of the damaged tissue before it had a chance to spread and they also gave him
antibiotics.
People are often afraid of spiders, and I’m sure that this fear could arise in a
number of ways. Some people may have first-hand experience being bitten by a
dangerous spider, and some people may fear what would happen if they were
bitten by a dangerous spider. Either of these scenarios can result in the same
fear of spiders.
This type of fear can be explained through principles of classical conditioning
because as children we are often taught to fear spiders. The fact that spiders can
be extremely dangerous is instilled in us at a young age, so as we get older this
fear becomes instinctive.
