HEALTH AND HOMEOSTASIS 2
Homeostasis is sustaining of a stable internal body environment via the body’s
physiological processes. This biological process is needed by the body to regulate its normal
functioning conditions. Blood coagulation refers to the formation of a clot to stop bleeding after
an injury. Blood components and blood coagulation help in homeostasis and health, by maintaining
a stable internal condition of an organism.
Blood components
Blood components such as the red cells being the most abundant in a body helps
homeostasis by carrying oxygen to cells in an organism reducing oxidative stress in body
functioning. Most body organs need oxygen to perform their activities efficiently.(Buttari et
al.,2015)Red blood cells have a respiratory pigment which binds to either oxygen or carbon
dioxide thus allowing oxygen which when breathed in be transported throughout the body and
carbon dioxide generated to be made outside the body cells.
White blood cells play immunological role by protecting the body from diseases helping
to maintain the health of an organism and homeostasis which is achieved by protecting the body
from invasion of bacteria and viruses. (Marques et al., 2016).Healthy body cells provide an
environment for standard functions to be carried out assuring the internal functions are maintained.
Platelets are small cell fragments that flow in the blood to help in managing vascular
integrity and regulate homeostasis. Their primary role is to stop bleeding at any injury made to the
endothelium. (Ghoshalk & Bhattacharyya, 2014.)Homeostasis is achieved by platelets gathering
at the injured endothelium to plug the hole attaching themselves, change shape secreting chemical
messengers and lastly connect through receptor bridges.
Blood plasma is the liquid portion of the blood and serves as a transport medium of
nutrients throughout the body cells of body organs and transporting all waste products from the
