Introduction
Strength-based nursing is an approach to care in which a nurse employs actions that
promote empowerment, self-efficacy, and hope (Gottlieb, 2014). When providing care, the nurse
dwells on patients and families' internal and external strengths, i.e., what they do best to solve
problems and minimize health deficits. The approach resonates with patient and family models
of resiliency and family-centered care pertinent to the mutually beneficial collaboration between
families and patients. In this type of care, patients and families actively identify health concerns,
decision-making, plan, and implementing strategies to promote and restore health. The nursing
intervention identifies that families have resources, strengths, and abilities to recover from
adversities. In this case, a family health nurse focuses on family strengths to yield the best
possible health outcomes (Gottlieb, 2014). This discussion board focuses on family
empowerment and family strength approach concerning the Gonzalez family, a Hispanic family
with a health history of obesity and diabetes.
Implementation of the Intervention
A family that can benefit from family empowerment and family strengths-based nursing
care is the Gonzalez family. In its third generation, the family has been plagued with diabetes
and obesity, with at least two members in each generation having been diagnosed with the
medical conditions. An empowerment approach can help the family become confident in making
healthy decisions and implementing practices and behaviors to promote their health to overcome
obesity and diabetes. As a family health nurse, I will facilitate family empowerment by involving
the family in making decisions and care plans (Kaakinen et al., 2018). This family possesses the
strengths of open communication, acceptance, and appreciation of each other, good family spirit,
dependability, respect for individuality, and honesty. I will bank on the family's sense of trust
