Substance abuse is a life-threatening issue associated with detrimental consequences
associated with repeated use of substances. Untreated substance use might lead to occupational,
social, and recreational disturbances (Rayan, 2017). Withdrawal and intoxication might
adversely affect health. Substance abuse patients should receive a thorough assessment and
reassessment and have their addiction symptoms and signs reported. Sudden changes in social
isolation, personality and behavior, and preoccupation with substance abused are some
symptoms of substance abuse (Rayan, 2017). This essay is a reassessment of a patient's treatment
plan based on the availability of new information.
Case Examination and the Reason for Change
Eliza's first therapy occurred after her school counselor found her drinking alcohol. The
initial treatment plan requires a reassessment because the client did not abstain from alcohol use.
She was found passed out in her dorm by a concerned citizen, alone and smelling of alcohol.
Eliza now risks losing her school scholarship because the institution's policies do not tolerate
drinking. Her initial assessment showed signs of a moderate alcohol use disorder, mild
depressive disorder, mild avoidant personality disorder, and mild gambling disorder.
The initial treatment goals focused on reducing alcohol consumption and anxiety by improving
self-image and time management skills. She did not demonstrate any change in overcoming
social anxiety and expressing her feelings. However, she voiced the desire to improve her family
relationships. Reports on her continuation with alcohol consumption could indicate a
misdiagnosis in the initial assessment.
