POLITICAL PARTIES IN 1850S2
The politics of slavery started during the time of great economic growth in the
United States of America. Railway lines, steamboats canals and telegraph helped to join
America into a single business market. During 1850s, there was split within the
democratic Republican Party, led by Andrew Jackson and Henry Clay respectively,
Jackson with his followers formed the Democratic Party while Henry formed Whig party.
Democratic mainly supported the policies of the Whig parties such as industrialization
and railways thus draining the Whig’s support. Due to expansion of Slavery in western
territories, it led to splitting of Whigs in 1850s. Voter during this period were identified
as with one party or other. Nomination conventions for the first time were held, whereby
parties used parades to rally voters. A second party system broke in 1850s due to the
issue of slavery.
The Whig party also broke in early decade. Due to the break down, most of its
members joined the Democratic Party also known as Know-Nothing party. Some of the
northern Democratic also joined the new Republican Party. In these years, there was a
boom in northern manufacturers, farmers and also a few laborers. Due to prosperous
slave trade based on cotton, it led to redistribution of the South’s slave population to
urban area, this affected the political parties in that, majority of their supporters were
lost. The selling of the slaves strengthened their economy hence some political parties
become more popular since they had capital to finance the rallies (LeMay, 013).
Due to expansion of slave trade into the land got from Mexico, it disrupted the
congress and most of the political parties. The congress was stopped after the ban of
slavery by Wilmont’s Proviso. Henry Clay was doomed since the beginning until Senator
Stephen engineered its passage. Douglas went apart with Clay’s bill thus component
