Lady Liberty Poem
The poem Lady Liberty is all about the 100
th
-anniversary freedom celebrations since the
statue of liberty. Tato Laviera (2014) refers to this statue of liberty as Lady Liberty in his poem.
People across the country irrespective of their status and background are all in celebrations that
ware also covered on television screens. The lady on the statue of liberty had suffered immense
destruction from the rays of the sun, exposure to snow, and strong winds. The lady was
discolored and rusty. These immense destructions symbolize how American society is destructed
since the weak and the poor are discriminated against. The country lacked equity, violation of
human rights was on the high, and democracy was overlooked. The 100
th
-anniversary
celebrations were one way of restoring liberty which constitutes freedom to the people of
America. The statue was renovated to symbolize freedom restoration. Freedom restoration
constitutes respect to the bill of rights, embracing socialism, democracy (right to vote), uniting
Americans by promoting peace, and offering settlements to the immigrants (Laviera, 2014).
Restoration of liberty will serve as a symbol of equality in American society as the lady liberty
warns, 'if you touch me, touch ALL of my people’. Lady liberty warning to Americans is that if
they ever think of renovating her, they should make sure that there are freedom and equality to
all Americans irrespective of their social class as she claims, ‘AMERICA, touch us ALL with
liberty’( Laviera, 2014).
Lady Liberty's poem is an empowerment poem to the people of the United States of
America. Lady liberty calls up the Americans to value and support all Americans in equity. The
poem calls on respect to the constitution, bill of rights, and democracy. It also advocates for
societal repair where the tired and the poor need to be given attention (Laviera, 2014). Liberty
celebrations should not be celebrations for wealth, having a complex defense system, and
