Discussion Forum: US Strategy
In relation to the four characteristics of successful strategies (clear, consistent, long-
term objectives; profound understanding of the environment; objective appraisal of
resources; and effective implementation), assess the US strategy towards Iraq during
2003-09.
a) Clear, consistent, long-term objectives: It may be debatable whether the reason the
U.S. entered the Iraq War was that there were Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)
harbored in Iraq, but once there, the U.S. established clear, consistent, long-term
objectives. From 2003 to 2009, objectives included the capture or killing of Saddam
Hussein and members of his regime; defeat the insurgency and Al-Qaeda; train and

advise the Iraqi Security Forces to take over security; and the formation of a unified
democratic federal Iraq that can govern, defend and sustain itself.
b) Profound understanding of the environment: One of the challenges that the U.S and
coalition forces faced, was the insurgents’ employment of Improvised Explosive Devices
(IEDs). In August and September 2003, IEDs were responsible for more U.S. combat
fatalities than the combined totals for direct fire weapons (small arms and rocket-
propelled grenades [RPGs]). The U.S. understood that in order to overcome this
challenge, it had to implement responses at the strategic, operational (tactics) and
equipment levels – with body armor and new vehicles which could defeat IEDs.
c) Objective appraisal of resources: “The Surge” of 2007 was a critical turning point for
the U.S. in achieving its objectives. Although engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan,
President Bush deployed five additional Army brigades to support Iraqi army operations
in and around Baghdad, and two Marine brigades to Anbar province to assist in
operations against Al-Qaeda. With this deployment of more than 20,000 additional US
forces, US troop levels in Iraq will exceed 160,000 in the next several months.
d) Effective implementation: With the events of September 11, 2001, still resonating,
and Saddam Hussein’s alleged ties to Al-Qaeda and WMD, most Americans supported
military action. But the main reason the Iraq war was successful is that the U.S. strategy
featured effective implementation of the above characteristics. The U.S. had to have
clear and long-term goals, but be flexible enough to understand the competitive
environment, and be objective when appraising resources.
Writing Assignment: Profitability Measures
Table 2.1 compares companies according to different profitability measures:
1. Which two of the six performance measures do you think are the most useful
indicators of how well a company is being managed?
I believe the two most useful performance measures are market capitalization and net
income. Market capitalization is what investors are actually willing to pay for the
company. Although the market cap of a company is an indication of the value of the
company, it is only a temporary metric based on the current stock market. The true
value of the company (profits, product positioning, balance sheet, etc.) may not be
reflected in the market cap.
Net income refers to the sum remaining after all expenses have been met or deducted.
It’s also related to net earnings and net profit. Net income is calculated by
taking revenues and adjusting for the cost of doing business, depreciation, interest,
