Evidence of Things Not Seen 2
"Evidence of Things Not Seen" Analysis
Introduction
Within the book “The Evidence Not Seen,” James Baldwin adopts a slow pace, one that
fits that of an in-depth analysis and valid social critique of American Society. The slow pace is
justified by diving into multiple subjects that require a frequent amount of pause and
introspection from the reader, evidence sustained by the adopted writing style - with frequent
usage of commas. A noticeable aspect of the book is that of having the Atlanta Murders of
1979-1981 act as a catalyst for addressing social issues that persist beyond the case. This is due
partially as a result of raising and debating themes of morality within the American Society
from the 1980s (with noticeable ramifications into the present), but also as a possible result of
the valid necessity of further understanding and raising empathy toward a widespread set of
issues that divide America to this day into distinct factions. These issues are quite noticeable
in handling the case, as the book would prove to illustrate.

depicted is that of at least 28 murdered children, for whom Wayne B. Williams was trialed and
convicted. However, while the trial and conviction are widely debated within the book, its main
focus is on social issues, most notably that of segregation. It explores what the models of
success are - what it means to be held in high regard in American Society. It is implied that a
civilized American model stems from the color of one’s skin - of being white. It contrasts with
those that fail. The neglected members of Society. That those who do not succeed simply lack
the motivation to change their lives. The implication that the black communities are inherently
