Executive Summary
The problem at hand involves performing beam analysis on different wood glulam beams and the select
the best for the application. The design load for the beam has been provided. Through the analysis, it will
be able to select the best beam for the selected application. Referring to the results obtained, the maximum
shear stress on point A and D was obtained as 2256.25 lbs. and 1943.75 lbs. respectively. The maximum
bending was obtained as 9150 lb/ft at a distance of 8 feet from end A. The deflection at supports was
approximately equal to zero indicating that it could not fall due to cracking and buckling.

Problem introduction / statement
All the beams given were wood glulam beams. The load provided was to be uniformly distributed on the
selected beam. The beams were made of planed dimensional lumber. The engineering properties of the
beams were maximum normal stress and the modulus of elasticity values of 6,000 psi and 1,600 ksi
respectively. The base width of all beams analyzed was uniform as 5.5 inch with a height increment
interval of 1.5 inch. In analyzing the beams, share stress diagram and bending moment diagrams were
prepared to determine the most appropriate beam for the design load given. A recommended beam should
have the lowest maximum bending value. Maximum beam bending should occur when the shear force is
equal to zero.
