Week 6 | Part 6: Finalizing the Plan
I have considered various options for my nursing specialty, including a close look at my selected
(or currently preferred) specialty and second-preferred specialty. I have also developed a
justification for my selected (or preferred) specialty. Lastly, I have examined one professional
organization related to my selected or preferred specialty and considered how I could become a
member of this organization.
The results of my efforts are below.
Step 1: Comparison of Nursing Specialties
One of the nursing specialties that I am considering is the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care
Nurse Practitioner (AG-ACNP). Advanced practice registered nurses work independently or in
partnership with other healthcare specialists to offer family-focused care. FNPs offer a wide
range of healthcare services that revolve around the family unit, from health promotion and
disease prevention to direct care and counseling across the lifespan (Graduate Nursing, n.d). By
gaining a master's degree in Family Practitioner Nursing, acquire clinical training in family
medicine, making them qualified to diagnose and treat complex health conditions (Graduate
Nursing, n.d). Nurse Practitioner training often focuses on equipping nurses with the relevant
skills to promote wellness and prevention of diseases while at the same time providing treatment
to various conditions within their education capabilities. The ability of Nurse Practitioner to
practice independently differs from one state to another, with some states requiring NP to work
under supervision.

Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners (AG-ACNPs) provide care to the elderly
community with complex acute care hospital and clinic settings. The patient population for AG-
ACNPs includes youth (13+) and young adults with skills dependent on needs based on disease
conditions. AG-ACNPs roles include stabilizing patients, providing complex monitoring, ordering and
interpreting diagnostic procedures tests, and developing complex acute care treatment plans designed to
optimize their community's health and prevent further complications. Most of the time, AG- ACNP's
work with patients with multiple comorbidity conditions. Their experience allows them to work in
different specialty areas, such as nephrology, cardiology, neurology, and the surgical area. In some
states, the AG-ACNP graduates are candidates to apply and sit to take the adult-gerontology acute care
nurse practitioner examinations offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the
American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AANC) Certification Corporation.
Another specialty area that I have considered majoring on is that of Public Health Nursing.
According to the American Public Health Association, public health nursing is "the practice of
promoting and protecting populations' health using knowledge from nursing, social, and public
health sciences" (American Public Health Association, 2013). Rather than working in hospitals
and clinical settings, public health nurses work in communities to promote healthy practices and
wellness. Graduates in Public health nursing are prepared to identify public health concerns with
a given community, identifying possible interventions that make use of the available community
resources, and teaching the community how to maintain health. By working with the community,
public health nurses can promote and enhance health in the community they serve.
