Are there areas you wish to change? Nope, not at all!
How can you develop your level of advocacy or perhaps, encourage others to
step out of their comfort zone?
o One way to get outside your comfort zone is to expand it. Make it a goal to avoid
running away from discomfort. Let’s stay with the theme of meeting people in
social settings. If you start feeling a little panicked when talking to someone
you’ve just met, try to stay with it longer than you usually would before retreating
to comfort. If you wait long enough and practice often enough, it will become less
uncomfortable.
o Take small steps toward the fear you are trying to overcome. If you want to do
public speaking, start by taking every opportunity to speak to small groups of
people. You can even practice with family and friends.
o Don’t make excuses, be honest. You will be in a better place to confront what is
truly bothering you and increase your chance of moving forward.
o Or, if you want to become better at something, you must start hanging out with
the people doing what you want to do and emulating them. Almost inevitably,
their influence will start to affect your behavior.
Consider what is needed for you to lead political advocacy and shared
governance in policy-making in your organization and profession. Share those
ideas!
Shared governance is a structure and process for partnership, equity, accountability,
and ownership. It puts the responsibility, authority, and accountability for practice-
related decisions into the hands of the individuals who will operationalize the
decision. I often hear people say they have shared governance. They then share an
example that, for me, is participatory leadership. There is no doubt that clarity about
the difference between participatory management and shared governance is needed
as organizations implement or strengthen their shared governance culture. For
example, a group of staff is asked to try several versions of the same product. The
group completes this trial by comparing the various products and then forwarding
their feedback to leadership. Leadership reviews the staff feedback and makes the

final decision on what will be purchased. The administration may or may not take
into account staff feedback, yet, the staff did have the opportunity to participate in
the product decision. This is participatory management.
Using a shared governance approach, let’s re-run the same scenario. A group of
staff is asked to try several versions of the same product and identify the product to
be purchased. Leadership articulates the parameters or criteria that the product
must meet to be bought. These parameters often include the budget amount,
vendors in the organization’s buying group, quantity needed, etc. Upon completion
of the trial, staff forwards their feedback to leadership. In addition to this feedback,
the team informs leadership that their chosen product meets all the articulated
parameters/criteria. Upon receiving this information, leadership thanks to the group
and proceeds to order the product identified by the shared decision-making staff.
Because of the articulated parameters/criteria, the response from leadership in a
shared governance culture would be “thank you,” and the purchase is processed
through the system. This is authentic shared governance leadership shared the
parameters/criteria, and staff made the decision.

Are you currently involved in a team or group that reviews employee feedback,
solves problems, and makes suggestions? Or is participatory or shared governance
practiced daily within your department? Any additional thoughts? Anyone else?

Keeyona,
Thank you for your amazing post. I love how you propose expanding the comfort
zone as a way to step outside of it. I have always thought about expanding my
comfort zone as doing something that I would never have done before. I am glad
you mentioned it this way it makes it sound way less scary! Ludwig (2019) explains
that the phrase comfort zone can be dated back to 1908 when psychologists seen
that steady performance was seen with individual relative comfort in repetition. She
explains that to make more of an impact in our lives and others we must redefine our
comfort zone. She proposes asking good questions about breaking out of the
comfort zone. She just looked into #VoteTogether whose main goal is to support
others and change the culture of voting in communities. I think this is a good idea. I
may have been more cultured about voting and what it was like and how to find the
right information had we been introduces to something like this when I was younger.
