The role of the nurse in the healthcare organization is to create an environment that
promotes the healing and health well-being of patients. For the nurse to create such an
environment, they have to develop positive professional relationships with their patients and also
engage in self-care. Upholding professional values in the healthcare environment goes hand in
hand with understanding one’s personal values and role to the patient. As such, the nurse’s
service aligns with the best interests of the patients as well as professional and personal values
that present ethical conduct. The case study of Mr. Newcomb presents an ethical dilemma where
the patient’s needs contradict professional boundaries and probably conflict with the nurse’s
personal value. My response to the client’s request would align with professional standards of
care while also being influenced by my personal values and the principles of ethics in healthcare.
Response to Scenario
The scenario undoubtedly tests the decision-making of the nurse and their personal
values. As the nurse in charge, Mr. Newcomb is basically asking me to lie to Mrs. Newcomb and
cover up for his affair in the last days of his life. On the one hand, covering up for Mr. Newcomb
would bring him joy and satisfaction and Mrs. Newcomb would probably not know about the lie.
On the other hand, regardless of the consequences of the lie that I would tell, this cover up would
be against my personal values of honesty and integrity and also would cross professional
boundaries, involving me in personal matters that do not concern the care of the patient. My
decision, in this case, would be to decline Mr. Newcomb’s request. I would politely decline to be
involved in that aspect of his life as it is between him and his wife. Without chastising the
patient, I would explain to them that it is beyond my professional duty and against my personal
values to be involved in his relationship to this extent and hence I cannot be involved in the
