Facing healthcare Disparities
While nurses strive to be fair in their work and care for people regardless of personal
biases and factors like race, socioeconomic situations, ethnicity, and other factors, there are still
healthcare disparities. Various people have different access to care. Factors like race and others
also affect the quality of care that people get. Therefore, it is important to ensure that as a
professional. One considers the challenges that they may face and strives to beat the odds to
ensure fairness in access and the quality of care. Nurses should use data and work with each
other in diverse settings to reduce the disparities that exist in healthcare.
Nurses should respond to the existing challenges to equitable care delivery by advocating
for changes that case fairness. Nurses are the biggest population of professionals in healthcare.
Therefore, they have a loud voice that they should use to cause changes. Nurses can advocate
through writing to legislators and leaders in various health fields to recommend positive changes
(Fenstermacher, 2020b). Nurses should also use data to direct their decisions. Data on disparities
can help nurse leaders in decision-making (Moulzolf, 2020). Nurses can apply knowledge on
issues like the development of illnesses and people's economic status to advocate for change.
Various factors in the US cause the healthcare disparities that nurses see in healthcare.
One example of a situation is the long history of racial unfairness like segregation and
discrimination. In the US, African Americans and Latinos live in congested areas like the
projects where they do not have enough access to healthy foods (Bergmark & Sedaghat, 2017).
Therefore, the populations have lots of access to fast foods that are unhealthy and responsible for
issues like diabetes and hypertension. African Americans face the causes of illnesses like poor
hygiene due to congestion and poor housing, malnutrition, and drug use. They also face poor
access to healthcare services. According to Bergmark and Sedaghat (2017), the disparities are
