BIO-220 Topic 3 DQ 2
I have lived in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles County, California, for over a decade. Poor
air quality is a major environmental problem here and we have had to contend with its reality for
a long time. It is not hard to notice the sight of smog concealing skylines within and around my
residence. A nationwide comparison by the American Lung Association (n.d.) ranks Los Angeles
as the worst polluted by ozone in the United States and among the top metropolitan areas
affected by particulate matter.
One of the major sources of air pollution in Los Angeles has been motor vehicle
emissions. A car culture within my neighborhood and the county at large has made Los Angeles
to be synonymous with bumper-to-bumper traffic particularly characterized by passenger cars
and trucks. As a consequence, residents of Los Angeles are exposed to over 50 percent more
vehicle pollution than the state average (Pinto, 2019). Moreover, the Los Angeles basin’s
geography and climate contributes to the trapping of the emitted toxins in the air and increased
exposure of residents to poor air quality (Pinto, 2019).
Air pollution in my district and county increases the risk of residents developing
cardiovascular disease, asthma, lung cancer, among other adverse health outcomes (Pinto, 2019).
These complications disproportionately affect low income residents who are more likely to be
exposed to unhealthy levels of pollution as a result of living close to freeways and industries
which are the major generators of particulate matter within Los Angeles (Pinto, 2019).
Moreover, with most White residents in the county residing away from these sources of
pollution, they are less likely to develop health problems compared to resident communities of
color (Pinto, 2019). Other groups identified to be at risk of aggravated conditions due to air
