Assignment 1
Based on your readings this week and your own personal experiences (as a student or as a
teacher), answer the following questions:
· Examine the components of a “good teacher”. Explain what they are.
· How does an educator create a classroom in which students are gravitated toward?
A good teacher is someone who takes joy in their job. As mentioned by Yonsuun Choe, she was
only able to shirk all of the negative stereotypes and the depressing elements of teaching
(particularly behavioral expectations of students) when she put into perspective that there is
something worth loving in everyone, especially her students. I personally always enjoyed being
in the classroom of a teacher who enjoyed her subject matter and appreciated my presence. I was
more likely to respond positively to an adult whose attitude was open and warm. This doesn’t
mean someone who is a pushover, because the teachers I loved the most were always those who
had high expectations of me despite my laziness, still it meant someone who I knew had my back
were something to happen no matter the discipline.
Student centered classrooms are created when a teacher incorporates a student’s desires into the
classroom experience. Teachers have to change the way they view classroom activities (which
means that just sitting and listening to a teacher lecture won’t suffice). Teachers must challenge
themselves to engage students and meet them where they are by designing the curriculum around
them. For student centered classrooms to work, teachers must get to know their students’ likes
and dislikes even if that sometimes sidelines the learning aspect of the classroom. Tailoring
assignments to the students’ likes and dislikes makes the students feel listened to and maintains
their interest in a lesson. For example, incorporating social media or

To design a positive classroom environment, one must start by acknowledging the role of
emotions in the classroom. A teacher must provide positive experiences to counteract the effects
of negative ones. Teachers must be a source of positive reinforcement and good experiences.
Teachers must target the root causes of behaviors by “autopsying” the classroom in order to
dissect the behavioral problems that are in the way.
Classroom management plays a critical role in the learning environment as well. The teacher
who described her negative experiences in the classroom until she realized that changing that
attitude around meant enjoying and appreciating all the elements of children was one of the
personal experiences that struck me in my own classroom. Classroom management was one of
the elements I struggled with in my classroom when I was a first year teacher, and which I have
seen is the main reason teachers struggle at first. Unfortunately, trying to act like a teacher I was
not (being strict, calling attention to minor behavioral issues, and generally just behaving like
teachers I have had in the past) meant that I was overcompensating, and the kids could see. This,
in turn, caused them to judge me harshly and unfortunately, it made the worst behaved kids act
up by talking back and attempting to “assert themselves”. By finally allowing myself to be
honest in the classroom and invite emotions first, I was able to undo those expectations from the
students and turn myself towards finding something to love in their personalities. I was also able
to get away from the stereotypes of past teachers that I felt had negatively marked my experience
with education.
