NURSING 2
Discussion Post 1
I have worked in a hospice setting for several years as a physician. Information
technology has played a critical role in the workplace to meet various healthcare requirements. I
first encountered information technology in a hospital when I used Electronic Health Record
System (EHRs) to access patient medical history as part of the diagnosis (Nelson & Staggers,
2017). Afterward, I have used several types of information technology in the hospital. For
example, I have used telehealth, electronic prescribing, computerized disease registries, and
clinical decision support.
Telehealth involves the use of digital electronic devices to improve the healthcare
services of patients at home. I used telehealth to offer healthcare services to diabetic patients who
could not move from homes to hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic. Telehealth served the
purpose during that period. I have also used an electronic prescribing system to prescribe
medications to the patients. It served the purpose by preventing prescription drug errors and
prescribes controlled substances (Aceto et al., 2018). More importantly, I have used
computerized disease registry software to capture, manage, and access information about
patients. The software served the purpose by improving health care safety and quality. Lastly, I
have used the clinical decision support tool to make an informed decision in the patients'
treatment plan (Aceto et al., 2018). For example, it used this tool to make hourly rounding to
prevent patient falls. This technology served the purpose by providing timely information to
make sound decisions on the patient's care.
