STAKEHOLDERS IN THE POLICYMAKING PROCESS 2
Stakeholders in the Policymaking Process
In the healthcare sector, several interest groups influence health policies. In the US, the
American Heart Association is an example of an interest group, and it has several roles in the
policymaking process. One of the roles is conducting a formal assessment on clinical trial
feasibility, where it comes up with evidence of required public health interventions for
cardiovascular diseases (Magid, Aziz, Cheng, Hazinski, Hoover, Mahgoub, & Lavonas, 2020).
Policymakers integrate the provided evidence-based interventions when making health policies.
Another role is coming up with healthcare principles that policymakers should address when
coming up with health policies. These principles ensure every individual in the US has access to
affordable and adequate healthcare. The association also project the cost and prevalence of
cardiovascular diseases and present their findings to policymakers. Policymakers use the given
forecasts to come up with health policies that promote prevention strategies of cardiovascular
diseases.
As an individual, I have been partially involved in the policymaking process. Since the
state governments and the federal government are responsible for making health policies, I have
been making efforts to reach government representatives who make health policies to give my
suggestions. In my attempts, I learned that there was a need to analyze political information. The
information could help me develop a strategy that can influence both patient care and political
agenda. According to Reynolds and Sariola (2018), active participation in the healthcare
policymaking process requires critical thinking about politics. I also learned that I needed
adequate resources. For a policy proposal to be considered, it requires to be backed with
evidence. Collecting evidence has been difficult for me because it needs research, meaning I
needed ample time and sufficient funds, which I did not have.
