English Language as the World’s Lingua Franca
English is the world’s Lingua franca (Ostler, 2010). Its initial reasons for spreading were
British colonialism, where most countries were colonized by the British. English can be seen as a
powerful economic, political, and scholarly tool for developing advanced societies and nations
since the industrial revolution, which began in Britain. American economic, political leadership
and superiority have contributed further spreading of the English Language. There are many
drivers, factors, and influences behind English becoming a language spoken by many people
around the world. Moreover, advertising, broadcasting, motion pictures, popular music,
education, and international travels contributed to English crossing borders and cultures
worldwide.
Globalization contributes so much to English becoming the world's Lingua franca. The
invention of the internet occurred in the U.S. Since it is used by many users when accessing
information, English continues to spread due to easy accessibility by many people around the
globe. Also, movies and airing television programs have contributed to English being the world's
Lingua franca. Most movie studios and televisions have their movies and programs in English,
thus making it popular. Even when a movie is acted in its native language, it will be translated
into English to make it convenient.
Globalization is playing a crucial role in making English the world's Lingua franca. It is a
good development since the interdependence of world cultures and economies has been made
easy and effective. English being the Lingua franca of the world makes learning easy; this comes
with significant advantages; it only has twenty-six alphabet letters, making it easy to grasp;
additionally, it is flexible since it is the first language of many people. Also, studying English
makes one's career prospects, and employments chances increase vastly. English also eliminates
