ASSIGNMENT 2: ARTICLE CRITIQUE 2
Assignment 2: Article Critique
The purpose of this paper is to critique the methodology used by the authors in a paper.
The selected paper for critiquing is entitled “Exploring Variation in Student Academic
Performance: Can Achievement in an Immersive Case Study Project Predict Exam Score in an
Introductory Accounting Course? The paper looks to determine if student achievement in the
classroom affects academic performance. The paper uses repeated measures ANOVA
methodology in the analysis of the data collected. This makes it suitable for critiquing for this
assignment.
From the article, the authors, Lyman and Olvido (2020), do not explicitly explain why
they chose to use repeated measures ANOVA for this study. However, from the knowledge of
repeated measures ANOVA, one can easily understand why Lyman and Olvido (2020) used this
method. According to Salkind (2010), it is appropriate to repeated measures ANOVA in
experiments that require measuring the dependent variable(s) of the same subject or object
several times. The measurement of the variables is taken at different time periods under different
conditions. For this case, the authors studied "whether student achievement in an immersive
classroom case study might affect subsequent academic performance” (Lyman & Olvido, 2020).
The dependent variable was the exam, measured multiple times in various terms (summer, fall,
and spring academic terms).
In terms of appropriateness, I believe that using repeated measures, ANOVA was the
most appropriate choice for the authors. As indicated in the article, the authors show that they
studied one of the dependent variables (exam) under different conditions over time. The authors
applied the following repeated measures of the ANOVA model.
