Intelligence Testing
Intelligence tests are often used today, especially in educational settings. The tests are
used to understand giftedness and especially in terms of intelligence. In general, intelligence
refers to the capability of someone to learn from experience, the use of metacognitive processes
to boost learning, and the ability for one to adapt to the surrounding environment (Sternberg,
2018). In educational settings, intelligence testing is used for various purposes, including
promoting inclusive education. There is more emphasis today in schools on considering a child’s
intellectual and cognitive capabilities. This is very important in determining the optimal learning
climate for the child as different children have different abilities and types of intelligence. There
exist various theories on intelligence that explain the different types of intelligence in people.
According to the Triarchic theory of intelligence, human intelligence can be categorized into
three categories, which are practical, creative, and analytical intelligence (Sternberg, 2018).
Analytical intelligence is one’s ability to assess information and utilize deductive reasoning to
arrive at reasonable solutions. Creative intelligence refers to the ability of a person to do
something in a novel and unique way or develop something from nothing. Practical intelligence
refers to “street smart” or the intelligence of common sense reasoning. Another theory of
intelligence is the theory of multiple intelligence, which proposes nine types of intelligence.
These nine types of intelligence include musical intelligence, naturalistic intelligence, logical-
mathematical intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, existential intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic
intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, linguistic intelligence, and visual-spatial intelligence
(Blue, 2015).
