THE GOAL A Process of Ongoing Improvement
The book The Goal is a novel written with a lot of focus and knowledge put in the
management field. It is a resourceful book to those tasked in management positions as the author
creatively builds an imagery of an operations plant and the daily activities conducted in the plant.
Although its fictional in nature, the author has brilliantly linked the piece to its applicability in
real life. The author through several characters and events brings about the challenges, the
bottlenecks and the remedies to these constraints that the plant operations are facing while also
showing how these theories can be directly applied in actual context. The main character in The
Goal is a composed guy called Alex Rogo though commonly referred to as “Mr Rogo.” As the
manager, he is tasked with overseeing the general running of the plant and also he is expected to
bring about complete changes in the way of doing business and restore the profitability and
efficiency of the firm. This paper seeks to summarizes concisely the general summary of the
book by focusing on the major events and characters in the book by analyzing every chapter
individually.
Chapter one of the novel begins with some sort of misunderstanding and conflicts

position. This has therefore resulted in some sort of conflict as everyone tries to prove their
supremacy right from the parking slot to commanding the employees. Bill begins the day by
threatening the staff responsible for handling the order (Eliyahu, Jeff 7). The four employees; the
shift supervisor, the hourly guy, union steward and the machining center foreman are frightened
and hurriedly approaches Mr. Rogo as he is heading towards his office as they try to seek his
intervention. Mr. Rogo calms them down and listens to all of them as they express their
grievances. The whole issue is about one order 41427 in which a customer had earlier made. No
progress had already been made and thus Bill was mad at the four employees as the order was
due and they were on the verge of failing to meet the dateline. Bill Peach learning the
intervention of Mr. Rogo in the issue chooses to face him right in his office and pours out his
frustration right on him. Bill having received a call the previous night from one of their greatest
customer inquiring about the progress of the order while expressing discontent. Bill is keen not
to fail the customer and takes up the tracking on his own (Eliyahu, Jeff 9). He accuses Mr. Rogo
as being in charge of the order and that he was the cause for the delay of the shipment as it was
under his department. Digging deeper, Bill claims that the confrontation was not really about the
delayed order or anything to do with service to customer but instead the plant that Rogo was in
charge was making losses. On his defense, Rogo attributes his poor performance to the reduced
number of employees in his plant since downsizing was done a while ago but Bill hears none of
that as he claims that the present employees needed to work harder to fill the gap. He threatens to
close down the plant unless Rogo turns things around in three months (Eliyahu, Jeff 14). This
leaves Rogo in deep thought as he holds a glass gazing silently for a while. The pressure is
becoming too much to contain.
