iCARE: Improving Communication and Collaboration
In the field of nursing, the supportive actions and values of compassion, advocacy,
resilience, and evidence-based practice can be applied to interprofessional teams to improve
patient outcomes. This supportive action model has been coined iCARE, where the first letter of
each action corresponds to the acronym: CARE. My current position is scheduling surgeries for
heart and lung patients in a Cardiothoracic Practice. In this setting, interprofessional teams are
always present and form an integral part of the workplace. When working with an
interdisciplinary group of professionals, there are many aspects that can affect the group’s
overall success. At my current workplace, I find that communication is a team function that can
be improved. “Interprofessional collaboration are essential to providing safe, effective, and
patient-centered care” (O’Leary et al, 2020). Although communication is a fundamental aspect
of working in groups, especially when dealing with patients, I find that sometimes
interprofessional communication at my workplace can be short, which can negatively influence
the collaboration between the interdisciplinary patient team. Taking into consideration my past
and current professional and clinical practice, I will break down each component of the iCARE
model, applying it to interprofessional team support, as well as highlighting the impact each one
could have on the culture of my unit and patient outcomes.
Compassion
One way to promote compassion in the workplace would be to ensure that all members of
the interprofessional team practice active listening and ask questions. Practicing active listening
with patients and their family members can bring both parties a sense of comfort and confidence
in their healthcare team. The interprofessional team ought to take detailed notes about their
